Annakkili Amma Research Institute (AARI), has extended their service to students and Researchers from India to preserve their Algal Herbarium in our AARI Herbarium center.
Algal Herbarium Center
Annakkili Amma Research Institute (AARI), is the first private organisation to hold the herbarium collection in Chennai, India. More over it is the first organization which is specialized center for algae. In India there are no such centers to submit the macro algal herbaria in active and most of the students used to submit in their home institutes, in which most of the institutes never maintain them properly, hence the idea of starting the herbarium collection center was came out.

Algae is a general word used for a large group of photosynthetic organisms, which includes organisms range from unicellular (e.g. Chlorella, Scenedesmus, Euglena, Chlymadomonas, Dinoflagellates,  Ditoms, etc.) to multicellular forms (Giant kelp, Sargassum, Gracillaria, Chondrus, Turbinaria and Macrocystis). eventhough these organisms are called as algae all of them are not closely related, they are paraphyletic.Their habitats also very diverse, they possibly live in every climatic conditions and every where wherever light and air can possibly reach to their minimum level.

There are some nomenclatural debates which unsolved till now in members of algae. Botanist calls a particular organisms as Blue green Algae/ member of Cyanophyta where as microbiologist calls them as Cyanobacteria. as this there is as another debate on Euglena, Eventhough Zoologist consider Euglena as member of Zooplankton we are considering both Euglena and Cyanophyta members as members of Algae only.
